I really don’t know anything about this piece in West Oakland, if you do leave a comment below.  I really like the layers of color and outline.  It also reminds me of Puff the magic dragon, so that is what I’m calling it until one of you correct me.

To be honest, I have no idea what these giant rusty pipes in West Oakland are intended to be used for, but a few artists have converted them into canvas.  The first piece is by Invade, the second by Feral Child but I’m not sure who did the pieces on the third pictures.  If you have any ideas, comment below so I can give the artist some credit.

Last Saturday the show “Young and Free” opened at 941 Geary in San Francisco.  This is the first major Australian Street art show in the States, so it’s gotten a lot of attention from the blogs and magazines.  I had a chance to stop by the opening night last Saturday, and I wrote an article for Warholian.  I thought it was a great introduction to Aussie street art, you’ll have to read the article to get my full opinion.  Here’s a link to the article:

But what street art show would be complete with out some art in the streets?  The artists painted a few murals and pasted a few posters, mainly on WallspaceSF spots, but I could be wrong.  I’ll be adding works to the map as I find them, here’s what I have so far:

Ok, Ok, summer break is over and it’s time I get back to updating the website.  Earlier this month I had a chance to interview Portuguese artist Pedro Matos for Warholian.com about his recent first solo show at Shooting Gallery.  I was able to talk to him about the show, his background in the arts and how he draws inspiration from the city streets in Lisbon.

A few weeks ago I posted a video on the GTSF homepage of JR’s acceptance speech for a $100K grant from TED.  In this talk he unveiled his Insideout project, a massive collaborative photography project that invites people from all over the world to submit portraits online. After that, JR will print and ship the photo back as a large, black and white portrait ready for pasting back into the community it sprang from.

The Insideout project has made it’s way to San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.  Last Sunday I was invited by Street artist Hugh Leeman to join a community installation of 16 portraits at 609 Ellis.  Here neighbors, photographers, press and corgi’s all hung out on a sunny, sunday afternoon, taking turns wheat pasting and sharing a few beers.  I unfortunately arrived late, after speeding up the 5 from LA over the weekend, so I missed the actual installation, thus no pictures of that.

Here’s what Hugh had to say about the project:
Ideally this San Francisco group action will act as an advertisement offering the viewer the opportunity to see the homeless in a dignifying light, while beautifying the very neighborhood the subjects of the artwork live in. In this group action that took place today people were not only able to see the collaborative efforts between myself, homeless photographers and an internationally recognized artist, JR but they were able to meet and see the subjects in action creating this mural. As I had the homeless not just be the subjects for this project but also be the photographers and creators of the mural as it was them who made this possible by pasting the portraits onto the wall. It is my art and this projects highest aspiration to imagine harnessing others thoughts and dreams to not only beautify the world around us but to introduce disparate groups to one another, ideally this project will operate as a real life facebook. Where posting ideas and musings about one another’s lives are not done on a digital wall of our computer screens but on a real wall in real life.

Last Wednesday I had a chance to visit D Young V while he was installing his show at White Walls Gallery.  I snapped a few glare-y cell phone pics while I was there, but Warholian has a bunch of great ones.  I wrote a little something-something about my visit and what I saw, check it out: http://warholian.com/2011/07/08/d-young-v-make-an-effort/

The show opens tonight, Saturday July 9th at 7pm, if you’re in SF you should definitely stop by and see it all for yourself.  I’ve featured D’s work on the site a few time and he has murals all over the city (Space Gallery, Amsterdam Cafe, and he’s working on one for Old Crow Tattoo in Oakland).
